Premier League Classics #1 – Newcastle United 1995-96 away
Regarded as one of the most beautiful away shirts of The Magpies in history. Inspired by the past, and more precisely by the shirt from over 100 years ago, when Newcastle West End, the club from which Newcastle United was formed in 1892, wore similar colors.
The 1995/96 season was Newcastle's best since 1927, when they last won the Premier League title. "The Magpies" under the leadership of Kevin Keegan played a very spectacular and effective football. Keegan's crew was then nicknamed "The Entertainers".
On December 24, 1995, after 19 league fixtures, they sat on the leader's chair with 10 points advantage over second-placed Manchester United and nothing indicated that anything would change in this matter. Newcastle from the beginning of the year until February 21 won five consecutive matches and their distance over the "Red Devils" remained at the level of 9 points. In addition, they had one game more to play than their direct rivals in the fight for the title.
Unfortunately, at the turn of February and March, Newcastle's form began to plummet. In six consecutive matches, Newcastle collected just 4 points and at the beginning of April said goodbye to the position of the Premier League leader. Five games until the end of the season Newcastle were losing 3 points to Manchester United, having one more game in hand. Before the last fixture, The Magpies came within two points and it was obvious that everything would be decided at the end of very end of the season.
Newcastle had to win at home against sixth-placed Tottenham and expect United to lose at Middlesbrough. A win for Ferguson's team and just a draw for Newcastle at St. James Park meant that, unfortunately, none of the above conditions were met, and Newcastle United only had to get by.
To this day, the 1995/96 season is considered one of the best and most interesting in the history of the Premier League.
