The players of German coach Otto Rehhagel first emerged from second place in Group A, where they had to face Portugal, Spain and Russia, and in the knockout phase they defeated France (quarter-final - 1-0), Czech Republic (semi-final - 1-0) and Portugal (final – 1:0). The best player of the tournament was the Greek midfielder Theodoros Zagorakis.
